Dongle is an idea I have to raise revenue for OL.
It would use a modified OL/EL client which, would connect simultaneously to either of the current ol/el game servers plus a separate server through which the following services would be provided :
1) Mumble in-game voice chat with global and private channels.
2) Cross-game public text channels (allowing OL and EL players to chat)
3) Off line text/voice messaging (like an improved version of Gossip)
4) Email/SMS text forwarding
5) Chat only mobile access via a web portal.
As the name suggests, to gain access, you'd need to purchase a dongle and and pay a small monthly renewal, however I wouldn't envisage more than a few $$$.

Why a dongle?
Thats a piece of hardware you must send via mail around the world.
Use a simple ID/code/password/whatever, which can be simply send via email.

I agree it's far more practical to authenticate users with a password/ID. I was looking at hid technology and thinking of ideas about how it could be usefully utilised but, after further research, I don't see it being any more use than as an OL novelty usb stick lol.
So, on that basis at least, the thread is pretty poorly named, as there's clearly not gonna be any dongle in project dongle. However, things like voice chat and cross game text chans may not be quite as dumb. It's those i'm going to try and work on after the tts project is finished, (which should be fairly soon).
